One of the signs that you may need to replace you old windows is if you really feel the cold when it’s winter and your home feels like a greenhouse in the summer. Windows are designed to be a barrier between the outside and your home – you should be able to have a view and not worry about being uncomfortable and losing money on inefficient energy bills.
At Climate Solutions we tailor our windows to suit your environment, whether we’re making windows for Wisconsin, windows for Illinois, windows for Indiana or windows for Minnesota or even windows for Pennsylvania. All of our windows can be configured to beat Energy Star 2016 with our wide range of glazing options, including Low Emissivity glass and super strength options such as Rhino Glass.
Another sign that your windows might need replacing is fogginess and damage – the fogginess can be seal-failure, meaning your double-pane unit is no longer functioning. In this case you can have someone repair the glass unit, but for only a small amount more you can get brand new windows.

I can see why someone would need to replace their windows. I am pretty sure that there is some fog in our windows during storms and cold weather. Does that mean that we need to replace them? Or is that normal?
It can depend on a multitude of factors – such as the moisture in your home or the state of your existing windows. The best thing to do would be to have a professional come and do an energy assessment on your home. If your windows need replacing they will be able to tell you!
I didn’t know fogginess could mean the seal on your window was broken. The fogginess must be moisture leaking in from the outside then. I’ll have to keep an eye out for any fogginess in my windows.
Absolutely, but only if the fogginess is between the glass. When the seal fails it allows the gas that’s between the glass panes to escape and it is replaced with normal air, which contains moisture.

In your article, you suggested that one of the signs that you may need to replace you old windows is if you really feel the cold when it’s winter and your home feels like a greenhouse in the summer. My wife has been complaining about how cold it is in our house all the time. What types of windows would be great for a location that gets really cold in the winter and really hot in the summer?
Hi Derek – thanks for your question! We would recommend going for a vinyl window that has a u-factor below 0.27. This means that it is an energy efficient window that exceeds Energy Star 2016 ratings (which means you can claim a rebate), but also indicates that the window has a very low rate of energy transfer. For the cold, we’d recommend going vinyl dual pane windows with i89 glass combined with a LoE glass – this will automatically bring down your u-factor to below 0.27 – you will see an enormous difference between this and older/standard windows. For stopping the ‘greenhouse’ feeling we’d recommend LoE366 as the glass that you’d combine, as this has the best Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) available on the market and will intercept a significant amount of the sun’s rays.
If expense was no concern then to get the most efficient windows possible the best way would be to go for triple pane glass (i89/clear/LoE-366) and have the frames and sashes insulated with our eco-friendly soy-based foam.
